About The Mary Wade Family
Please sign in to see more.
The Mary Wade Family is one of the largest and oldest non-indigenous families in Australia. There are now perhaps as many as eighty or ninety thousand of us scattered all over the world, although most of us still live in NSW.
Mary was born in London in about 1777 and lived there in poverty with a mother and a couple of siblings. Life was very tough for poor people in those days. The city was overcrowded, descent housing and jobs were almost impossible to find, and poor people lived in squalor by picking up or stealing anything they could find.
In 1788 Mary and another girl took a younger girl into a public toilet and stole her clothes and pawned them. She was soon caught, arrested and taken to Court at the Old Bailey where she was convicted of robbery and sentenced to death.
